Shuddha Desi Romance

Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor
Director: Maneesh Sharma

By nature we are polygamous.  I have had this conversation with my friends, believers, non-believers numerous times. Marriage is forced upon us to keep social structure going. Arranged marriages dominated as long as we can remember. But movies sell us love stories. Eternal love of spotless mind. Songs and soul mates. The One. Stuff that’s dreams are made of. This is contradiction. But some movies strike the nice balance between both. This is as close as to real then. Shuddha Desi Romance is one of them.

Perpetual state of confusion is something many will identify with. Raghu (Sushant Singh Rajput) is one of them. He is a tour guide in Jaipur (beautifully used a backdrop for this tale of randomness). He is also a paid baraati  to weddings to face lift it I guess. I don’t know if such profession exists. But it works very well in the favor of movie. He meets Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra). She is also part time into this line. He meets her when she is part of this fake crew to his own wedding. They talk and flirt and eventually kiss. He flees the scene next morning from his own wedding mandap.

They meet again and before both know they make out and living together. What follows is the depiction of real and intimate relationship between a budding couple through series of smart, funny, witty conversations. The lust and non complete trust. Hate to admit but crazy stupid love. The inevitable past that we call baggage. The promise and fear of future. All that. One standout of many is the confrontation scene between two is one of the best things I have seen. (when Parineeti breaks down- (“Akele jaana pada tha, agali baar jana pade to pagal khaane jana padega”) (Tum sirf baatein kar sakte ho jo kar rahe ho) Raghu’s may be only few inner most revelations – “Safe side rakhana padata hai“Kabhi kabhi to khudase dar lagata hai”) You will get these lines when you get the context in movie.

It’s twisted ride. We see many twists and turns and bathroom breaks. I don’t reveal plot much. There is the second girl (Vaani) as well. The story of continuous infatuation, commitment phobia, fighting against trouble seeking instincts goes into circles and goes on a bit too long. But comes to something what I call satisfying end.

Actors are in terrific form and perfectly cast. Parineeti steals the show though. This is a movie from Band Baja Baraat director who should get all the accolades he deserves so is the writer (Jaideep Sahni) whose witty words are pure delight just like film’s title. It’s fun and closet filosophy guys. Mixed. Shaken. Delicious. Now drink it up and repeat.
