“Maine kaha tha na, isase tera jam jayega” (Din’t I tell you, this will just make it). Well it makes it fine. In opening few scenes Ila (Nimrat Kaur) a housewife in suburdban Mumbai is making lunch for her husband. Voice is of Deshpande auntie (Bharti Acharekar) who we never see but only hear. That dabba is picked up by the famous Mumbai dabbawala service which eventually lands up on a widower Fernandes’ (Irrfan) desk instead of her husband. The Lunchbox is a solemn, small miracle of a movie by debutant Rajat Batra which is about two ordinary souls chanced upon each other by a seemingly impossible mistake (Statistics says it’s one in six million). Like a deliberate mischief by a clever writer or a lame prankster.
